What should you do following a slip, trip or fall?
It is easy to feel foolish if you have fallen over, even if you did so as a result of someone else's negligence. Our natural instincts tell us to move away from the scene of the accident as soon as possible, especially if treatment for injuries is needed.
There are a number of practical things you can do at the accident scene which will help any potential claim you may make at a later date.
These are as follows:
Photograph the scene of
the accident and anything else that may be significant. For example, the
floor surface and any defective coverings or holes, the clothing and shoes
you were wearing and any visible warning signs relating to the defect. Also,
take pictures of your injuries if they are visible and take further pictures
if they worsen.
Write down the names and contact details of witnesses who saw the accident
happen or saw the defect
Write down the names and contact details of anyone else you know that had
previously been, or was subsequently; injured by the same defect.
If the accident happened at work or in a public place, make sure you report
it to a manager and ensure they write it in their accident book.
Keep the shoes that you were wearing.
